Rahul Mamkootathil, the MLA representing Palakkad, has been suspended from the Kerala Congress party amid serious accusations of sexual misconduct and coercion. The allegations include sending inappropriate messages and threatening a pregnant woman, as evidenced by a leaked audio clip. Actor-model-turned-journalist Rini Ann George and transgender woman Avantika have accused him of sending offensive and sexually suggestive messages since 2023, including invitations to overnight stays at 5-star hotels. The leaked audio clip, which has not been independently authenticated, reportedly captures a conversation where Mamkootathil threatens the woman and attempts to force her to have an abortion. The controversy began after Rini Ann George reported that Rahul used to harass her and that she had reported this to the Congress leadership. She also claims he has repeatedly misbehaved with the wives and daughters of several leaders. The audio clip reveals the MLA’s concerns about the pregnancy “destroying” his life and his threats. The conversation in the audio clip starts with the woman’s question: “What do you mean you want to get rid of that(child) without my permission?” Rahul answers: “It’s not about your permission, you aren’t thinking about it, you aren’t thinking about the consequences.” The woman states that she would face the consequences without his help. Mamkootathil responds with threats, emphasizing his power and his ability to “kill” the woman. The suspension means that Mamkootathil will be seated separately during the assembly session starting on September 15, however, it is expected that he might avoid attending the session, taking a leave instead. The KPCC will seek a written explanation from him regarding the allegations, and if his response is considered inadequate, expulsion is likely. The opposition BJP has also demanded his resignation from the state assembly, further escalating the political pressure. The allegations and audio recording are a major issue within Kerala politics.
