The air in Delhi-NCR is expected to be a little livelier this Diwali, thanks to a Supreme Court order permitting the use of ‘green crackers’. This decision, made days before the festival, allows the sale and bursting of these specific eco-friendly fireworks from October 18th to 21st. The Supreme Court has mandated strict adherence to timings, with permissible hours set for 6 AM to 7 AM and 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali day. The court’s directive aims to strike a crucial balance between celebrating the festival and mitigating the severe air pollution plaguing the region. Only firecrackers certified by NEERI and PESO are eligible for use, and these must be sourced within the NCR. Authorities are under strict orders to monitor air quality, collect samples, and ensure compliance, with police vigilance against the sale of unauthorized or fake products. A three-week review period will determine the future of green cracker usage.
