A substantial enhancement to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) long-range strike capability is on the horizon with the DRDO’s proposed Astra Mark 2 missile. This cutting-edge air-to-air missile is being developed to exceed a 200-kilometer engagement range, significantly widening the operational envelope for IAF pilots. Plans are in motion for the procurement of approximately 700 Astra Mark 2 missiles, which will be integrated into the IAF’s formidable Sukhoi and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) platforms. This initiative underscores India’s dedication to fostering indigenous defense technology and achieving self-sufficiency in critical weapon systems. The extended range is particularly vital for maintaining an advantage in Beyond Visual Range (BVR) engagements, ensuring that India’s air power remains a formidable deterrent. This strategic procurement will equip the IAF with advanced BVR missile technology, crucial for modern air combat superiority.
