Amidst the ongoing first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections, covering 121 seats in 12 districts, the RJD has lodged a complaint alleging intentional power cuts designed to suppress votes. The party claims these disruptions are strategically implemented in areas where the Mahagathbandhan has significant support. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav specifically pointed to ‘strong booths’ where electricity is reportedly being cut intermittently to slow down voter turnout. The RJD expressed its concerns via a social media post, urging the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate notice and decisive action. However, the ECI has strongly refuted these accusations. The Chief Electoral Officer for Bihar dismissed the allegations as ‘misleading’ and lacking any foundation, assuring that voting is proceeding smoothly and transparently across all designated polling stations. Standard electoral protocols are being strictly followed to guarantee a fair process. In a new development this election, top ECI officials, including the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, are personally overseeing polling activities through CCTV surveillance from a central monitoring hub. The current phase of voting will decide the fate of 1,314 candidates vying for election.
