The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has condemned the 1975 Emergency as an ‘era of injustice,’ attributing it to the Congress party’s ambition for power. The Narendra Modi-led government has designated June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to remind the current generation of this dark period in Indian history. In a social media post, Shah emphasized the pain inflicted on the nation during the Emergency. He criticized the Congress for undermining democratic institutions, including curtailing press freedom and suppressing dissent. The Union Cabinet held a moment of silence in memory of those who suffered and lost their rights during the Emergency. A resolution was also passed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. The resolution underscored the Emergency’s damaging effect on the Indian Constitution and its democratic values, while reiterating India’s ongoing dedication to upholding its constitutional principles.
