The Indian Army is continually incorporating new weaponry to fortify the nation’s security and augment its capabilities. In a move to boost indigenous defense, the army will soon receive 25 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv Mk III. The order for these helicopters was placed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in March 2024.
This significant deal, valued at more than ₹8,073 crore, aims to modernize the army’s aviation wing. The focus is on operations in challenging terrains like the Siachen Glacier and Ladakh.
The Dhruv Mk III is distinguished by its advanced equipment. Each helicopter will be equipped with an electro-optical (EO) pod from Israel’s Elbit Systems and an Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) from Sweden’s Saab. This enhances operational effectiveness and bolsters security in combat situations. The Dhruv Mk III, designed and manufactured by HAL, is a multi-purpose helicopter. The utility variant (Mk III UT) is highly suitable for transporting troops and supplies, search and rescue operations, reconnaissance, and medical evacuations.
Its proven capabilities in high-altitude areas such as Siachen and Ladakh make it an important asset for the Indian Army. The Elbit Systems EO pod offers advanced day-and-night surveillance, target identification, and designation capabilities. It includes features like high-resolution thermal imaging, a laser range finder, and a target designator, ensuring accurate operations in all weather conditions. Saab’s IDAS protects the helicopter from threats like missiles.
With these advanced technologies, the Dhruv Mk-III is poised to become a robust platform in modern warfare. This will give the Indian Army an advantage against potential threats and assist in countering combat aircraft like the JF-17. The contract includes 25 Dhruv Mk III helicopters for the army and 9 for the Coast Guard. This deal is a significant achievement under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Remarkably, HAL delivered the first six helicopters to the army by the end of March 2024, just two weeks after the deal was finalized.
