Sonia Gandhi, the former president of the Congress party, has voiced strong criticism of the Indian government’s handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict, urging a more proactive role for India. She argues that the government’s lack of comment on the issue represents a failure to uphold both humanitarian and moral principles.
In a recent newspaper article, Gandhi claimed that the government’s actions on the international stage are often influenced by personal connections rather than India’s constitutional values or strategic interests. She specifically linked the government’s silence on Palestine to the close relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The article also takes aim at the government’s preference for personalized diplomacy, referencing the Modi-Trump relationship. Gandhi suggests this approach is not conducive to sound foreign policy and points to recent difficulties as a consequence.
She noted the recent recognition of Palestine by France, joining nations such as Britain, Canada, Portugal, and Australia. She highlighted that more than 150 of the 193 member states of the United Nations recognize Palestine.
Gandhi recalled India’s historical support for Palestine, including its long-term backing of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), culminating in India’s formal recognition of the Palestinian state on November 8, 1988. She cited India’s earlier condemnation of apartheid in South Africa and its support for Algeria during its war for independence (1954-62). She also highlighted India’s support for Bangladesh during its 1971 war with Pakistan, where India played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s independence.
Gandhi emphasized the need for India to take a leadership position regarding the Palestinian issue, which she frames as a battle for justice, recognition, dignity, and human rights. She emphasized that India has a history of taking a balanced and principled approach on sensitive international matters like Israel and Palestine.
This latest article is Sonia Gandhi’s third in recent months addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict, each one criticizing the Modi government’s stance on the matter.
