The Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has handed over the ICGS Akshar to the Indian Coast Guard, adding a powerful asset to the nation’s maritime security apparatus. This advanced Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) is the second in a series of eight, constructed under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. The Akshar spans 51.43 meters in length and 8 meters in breadth, with a displacement of approximately 330 tons. Featuring two marine diesel engines driving controllable pitch propellers (CPP) – a pioneering technology for this vessel class – it ensures exceptional speed and operational efficiency. The vessel boasts a top speed exceeding 27 knots and can cover 1,500 nautical miles without refueling. With a crew of 6 officers and 35 sailors, the ICGS Akshar is set to play a crucial role in various missions, including fisheries protection, EEZ surveillance, coastal patrols, anti-smuggling operations, anti-piracy measures, and search and rescue efforts. The delivery of the ICGS Akshar underscores not only the commitment to maritime security but also the success of the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
