The government is moving forward with the acquisition of additional Tejas Mark-1A fighter aircraft. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is expected to deliver two Tejas Mark-1A fighter aircraft next month, with a new contract potentially in the works for 97 more. The Indian Air Force had previously expressed concern over delays in the supply of Tejas Mark-1A aircraft. The delivery of the first two aircraft, including weapon integration, is anticipated by the end of September.
Currently, around 38 Tejas aircraft are operational, and approximately 80 more are under production. In February 2021, the Ministry of Defence and HAL reached an agreement for 83 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft, a deal valued at ₹48,000 crore. Delays in deliveries were primarily due to engine supply issues from GE Aerospace. The recent approval for an additional batch of 97 Tejas fighter aircraft will cost approximately ₹67,000 crore. HAL’s order book is expected to be filled for the next four to five years. The focus is on platform enhancement, including radar integration and the incorporation of Indian weaponry, to create a valuable asset alongside the Sukhoi. The single-engine Mk-1A is designed to replace the MiG-21 fighter jets in the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force is considering the introduction of these fighter aircraft, given the reduction in its fighter squadron strength from 42 to 31.
