Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are grappling with a severe air pollution episode, characterized by toxic smog and critically high Air Quality Index (AQI) readings. According to the latest data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), numerous areas have recorded AQI levels surpassing 400, classifying them as ‘Severe’ and posing significant health risks. Critical hotspots include Jahangirpuri, Anand Vihar, and Bawana, among others, indicating widespread hazardous air quality. Over half of Delhi’s monitoring stations are reporting AQI in this dangerous zone. The atmospheric conditions have led to a dramatic drop in visibility, deterring outdoor activities and impacting the daily routines of residents, including at iconic locations. The pollution’s impact is also felt across the NCR, with Ghaziabad reaching ‘Severe’ levels and Noida close behind in the ‘Very Poor’ category. This deteriorating air quality raises serious alarms for respiratory and cardiovascular health. Citizens are demanding urgent action, with recent protests highlighting dissatisfaction with current pollution control measures and advocating for more impactful, sustainable interventions to clear the air.
