New Delhi has confirmed that three Bangladeshi nationals fatally shot in Tripura were armed smugglers engaged in illegal cross-border activity. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the group had trespassed into Indian territory on October 15, 2025, and launched a violent attack on villagers attempting to prevent cattle theft. One villager tragically lost his life during the confrontation.
The incident occurred approximately 3 kilometers inside Indian land near Bidyabil village. The smugglers reportedly used sharp weapons, including iron dahs and knives, against the villagers. Security forces responded to the scene, discovering two smugglers deceased. The third succumbed to his wounds the following day. Their bodies have been repatriated to Bangladesh, and legal proceedings have been initiated.
The MEA emphasized that this event underscores the necessity for enhanced bilateral cooperation. India called upon Bangladesh to strengthen border management and actively support efforts to construct fencing where necessary to effectively combat smuggling and criminal incursions.
Following India’s official clarification, Bangladesh expressed strong disapproval, labeling the killings as brutal and unacceptable. Dhaka has called for an urgent, unbiased, and transparent investigation and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.
