India is actively seeking to deepen its defense ties with Brazil, highlighted by a proposal to supply the nation with its indigenously built Akash missile system. This significant offer was made during recent high-level talks in New Delhi attended by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. Brazil’s Defence Minister, Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho, was also present, emphasizing the importance of the meeting.
The core of the discussions revolved around fortifying the strategic partnership, with a specific focus on identifying potential areas for joint initiatives in defense production and technology transfer. Both countries are eager to explore co-development opportunities, aiming to synergize their manufacturing expertise and innovative research to bolster mutual security interests.
The Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the talks were geared towards expanding military-to-military cooperation and enhancing the defense industrial collaboration between the two nations.
The Akash missile system represents a significant achievement in India’s defense technology sector. This medium-range surface-to-air missile, a product of DRDO, is designed for robust air defense, capable of intercepting various aerial targets within a 30 km radius and up to 18 km altitude. Its operational efficiency is enhanced by its solid-fuel propulsion, command guidance, and advanced multi-target tracking radar. Serving with India’s armed forces, the Akash system, including its advanced Akash-NG variant, is a key component of national air defense and is actively marketed globally for export.
