Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Maldives centers on bolstering the bilateral relationship, starting with attending the 60th Independence Day celebrations where he served as the Guest of Honour. This visit also commemorates 60 years of diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives. The visit’s agenda aims at addressing recent tensions stemming from the current President’s critical stance towards India. The ‘India Out’ campaign and the move towards China indicate a shift in dynamics, prompting efforts to stabilize and improve relations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the Maldives is a very close partner under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ initiative and MAHASAGAR vision. The focus will be on the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’. Also, PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate various India-assisted development projects. During the visit, multiple MoUs will be signed. PM Modi received a formal welcome at Republic Square in Malé and met with ministers and officials from the Maldivian government. Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu was present during the official welcome and meetings. He also held discussions with Indian officials, including EAM Dr. S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
