External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s view on the India-US relationship, referencing recent comments from US President Donald Trump. Jaishankar noted that PM Modi places significant importance on the partnership with the US. He confirmed that Modi has a good personal equation with Trump. Jaishankar emphasized the continued engagement between the two nations. These statements came after Prime Minister Modi responded positively to Trump’s assessment of the relationship, using the term ‘forward-looking’ for the Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership. Trump, in his remarks at the White House, described the relationship as ‘very special’ and reaffirmed his friendship with Modi, while simultaneously expressing some disapproval of current actions. When asked about resetting relations, Trump confirmed his friendship but revealed disagreements. He expressed disappointment over India’s oil purchases from Russia and mentioned a high tariff on Indian goods. The MEA spokesperson previously discussed the importance of the bilateral relationship during a weekly press briefing, emphasizing the strategic partnership and the shared values. The spokesperson indicated that the partnership has endured challenges and that both nations remain focused on their agenda, hoping for continued progress based on mutual respect and shared interests.
