CP Radhakrishnan was sworn in as India’s 15th Vice President on September 12, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu officiated the oath-taking ceremony at 10:10 am. Radhakrishnan, a 67-year-old BJP veteran from Tamil Nadu and an RSS affiliate, won the vice-presidential election with 452 votes. B Sudershan Reddy, the Opposition INDIA bloc candidate and a former Supreme Court judge, garnered 300 votes. Radhakrishnan’s victory was predictable due to the robust support from the BJP-led NDA, boasting 427 MPs, along with backing from the YSR Congress Party and smaller parties, well above the required majority. There were also indications of cross-voting in the election. This election came after the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. Consequently, Radhakrishnan resigned as Governor of Maharashtra. Until a new governor is appointed, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat is managing the additional charge of Maharashtra. Radhakrishnan, a two-time MP from Coimbatore and former BJP Tamil Nadu chief, has a long and successful political career, starting with the Jana Sangh and continuing within the BJP.
