
In a landmark development, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will assume the role of President for International IDEA, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. The formal transition will occur on December 3, 2025, in Stockholm, Sweden. This prestigious appointment underscores the global appreciation for the Election Commission of India’s unwavering commitment to ensuring independent, transparent, and credible elections. Kumar expressed his profound honor, noting that India’s success in conducting free and fair elections has been globally recognized. He highlighted that this is the first time in the organization’s 30-year history that India has been invited to chair International IDEA by a consortium of 37 democratic countries. He emphasized this as a moment of immense pride for the Indian populace and all individuals involved in the electoral commission. International IDEA, an inter-governmental organization founded in 1995, is dedicated to enhancing democratic processes across the globe. It boasts 35 member countries, with the U.S. and Japan holding observer status. India, a founding member, actively participates in IDEA’s research, capacity enhancement projects, and training initiatives. With a voter base exceeding 900 million, India is uniquely positioned to share its vast electoral experience and pioneering methods with Election Management Bodies worldwide during its 2026 presidency.
