A government hospital in Indore is under scrutiny following a report that two newborns were bitten by rats while in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The babies, born last week, were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH), a leading hospital in Madhya Pradesh.
Staff discovered bite marks on the infants and alerted hospital officials. Subsequent review of CCTV footage confirmed the presence of rats. The incidents occurred over Monday and Tuesday. Dr. Ashok Yadav, the hospital superintendent, reported that one baby was bitten on the fingers, while the other suffered bites to the head and shoulder. Both newborns were reportedly born with pre-existing conditions. One of the affected infants was originally found abandoned in the Khargone district and brought to MYH for treatment. As of Tuesday, the condition of the newborns was stable.
Hospital management has been directed to take immediate action, including installing stronger barriers to prevent future rat infestations. Family members of patients have been instructed to refrain from bringing food into the ward.
