The Indian government, through Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, has responded to criticism from former Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari concerning the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). Patil dismissed Bhutto’s statements, asserting that India’s position remains firm and that any decisions made will benefit the country.
Patil stated that the government’s position on the treaty is unchanged. The minister emphasized that the Indian government and the Prime Minister have the authority to decide on the treaty’s future and that these decisions will be made in the best interests of the nation.
The Indian government’s stance follows its earlier decision to suspend its participation in the IWT, a decades-old agreement regarding water sharing between India and Pakistan. This measure is part of a broader strategy in response to allegations of Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism.
