The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has achieved a momentous first in its mountaineering history, with an all-women team successfully summiting Mount Nun (7,135 m), part of the Nun-Kun mountain range in Kargil. This remarkable accomplishment highlights the ITBP’s prowess in high-altitude expeditions. The expedition commenced on July 3, 2025, from the ITBP headquarters in New Delhi, with Rahul Rasgotra, IPS, Director General, ITBP, overseeing the commencement. Before the ascent, the team underwent a rigorous month-long training program in Leh, Ladakh, which included acclimatization and technical training. The first rope team, comprising seven mountaineers and three technical support members, reached the summit of Mount Nun at 09:25 AM on August 13, 2025, following an overnight climb from the summit camp. The second rope team, consisting of seven mountaineers and two technical members, reached the summit on August 14, 2025, at 08:50 AM, completing the historic climb. Mount Nun, the highest peak in Jammu and Kashmir, is a challenging climb known for its rugged terrain, including mixed ice-rock formations, sharp ridges, crevassed glaciers, steep ice walls, and unpredictable weather. The mountain is a recognized training ground for 8,000-meter expeditions, requiring immense stamina, advanced technical skills, and careful strategic planning. With the success of this all-women expedition, the ITBP has added another significant achievement to its mountaineering record. The ITBP has previously scaled six of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga, and has achieved five successful ascents of Mount Everest. The Mount Nun expedition is a symbol of the force’s excellence, empowerment, leadership, and proficiency in high-altitude operations.
