The Garhwa district of Jharkhand is reeling from a case mirroring the Raja Raghuvanshi incident, where a wife is alleged to have poisoned her husband to death a mere 30 days after their marriage. The event has caused widespread panic throughout the village. Upon receiving the news, the police seized the man’s body and sent it for a post-mortem examination. Simultaneously, the accused wife was taken into custody and is now under investigation. The incident has left everyone in a state of shock.
Budhnath Singh, a resident of Bahokundar village in the Ranka police station area of Garhwa, married Sunita Devi, who hailed from a village in Chhattisgarh, on May 11, 2025. Sunita harbored a deep-seated dislike for Budhnath, even expressing her hatred, leading her to return to her maternal home a week after the wedding. Despite requests from her husband and in-laws, she refused to return, which resulted in a village panchayat being held.
On June 15th, Budhnath traveled to his in-laws’ place. After significant persuasion, he brought his wife, Sunita, back to their village, Bahokundar. Tragically, he was oblivious to the fact that he was returning home to his death. Upon their return, Sunita initiated her plan. She sent her husband to buy pesticide (poison) designed for use on plants.
Unquestioningly, the husband purchased the pesticide. Taking advantage of the situation, the wife mixed the poison into her husband’s evening meal, resulting in his demise. The next morning, the mother discovered her son deceased, which led to an uproar within the family and village. The villagers apprehended the accused daughter-in-law and immediately notified the Ranka police station.
The police arrived at the scene, took custody of the man’s remains, and sent them for a post-mortem examination. The police apprehended Sunita Devi and, acting on the victim’s family’s complaint, initiated a formal investigation into the case.
