Jharkhand’s Agriculture Minister, Shilpi Neha Tirkey, shared insights on the Jani Shikar festival, a traditional Uraon tribal event celebrated every 12 years. The Minister explained that the festival commemorates the Rohtasgarh victory, a historic moment where tribal women fought against the Mughals. A key aspect of the celebration involves women dressing as men and participating in hunting, symbolizing their courage. She was speaking at the Jani Shikar festival 2025, organized in Assam by the All Tribal Women’s Association of Assam and the All Tribal Students Association of Assam at the Dibrugarh District Library auditorium. As the chief guest, Minister Tirkey highlighted the significance of cultural preservation and the passing down of traditions. Furthermore, the Minister addressed the long-standing struggles of the tribal communities in Assam, pointing out issues such as exploitation, inadequate healthcare, lack of education, and the fight for fair wages and inclusion in the ST list. The Minister also spoke about the ongoing struggle for women’s empowerment. She also warned of attempts to alter the constitution and undermine the fundamental rights of citizens. Dr. Sonajharia Minj, the UNESCO co-chairperson, and other dignitaries attended the event.
