In light of escalating online cyber fraud, ATMs are perceived as a safer option for cash withdrawals. However, citizens in Ranchi are now facing a new threat: ATM fraud. Cybercriminals are particularly targeting ATMs lacking security personnel, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance.
These fraudsters operate across various police station jurisdictions in the capital city. They target individuals attempting to withdraw money, often exploiting situations where debit cards become stuck in the machines. Once the card is trapped, the criminals employ various tactics to gain access to the victim’s funds.
The gang has been active for an extended duration, preying on people in various areas within Ranchi. Between February 3rd and June 22nd, they successfully targeted individuals in seven different locations, resulting in significant financial losses. The lack of robust action against the criminals has allowed them to continue their activities, posing a major challenge to the Ranchi police. The fraudsters often use a combination of technical manipulation and social engineering to steal money.
When an individual’s card is stuck in the ATM, an individual approaches, claiming to offer assistance. They provide a deceptive phone number, directing the victim to another ATM or a bank, enabling the criminals to withdraw funds undetected.
