The cabinet convened on Wednesday to discuss the potential designation of the Saranda region in West Singhbhum district as a Wildlife Sanctuary. A Group of Ministers has been formed to provide recommendations to the government on this matter. The state government will subsequently make a decision based on these recommendations. The Group of Ministers will investigate the economic and social implications of the sanctuary and submit a report. Stakeholders from all relevant departments will also contribute their perspectives. The proposal will then be presented to the cabinet for final consideration.
Recent reports also detail a police encounter in Gumla, Jharkhand, resulting in the death of three JJMP militants.
The sanctuary plan involves the protection of 575.19 square kilometers, including the villages of Ankuwa, Samta, Karampada, Gudlibag, Trikoshi, and Thalkuwad in West Singhbhum district. This information was shared by Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel after the cabinet meeting, where 27 proposals were ratified.
The Saranda forest area is known for its rich biodiversity, serving as a habitat for the endangered flying lizard. The region is home to over 40 mammal species, 162 bird species, nine amphibian species, and 33 reptile species. The area’s wild elephants are also a well-known feature.
In addition to the sanctuary proposal, the cabinet approved the rehabilitation of 780 families impacted by the Mandal Dam and Palamu Tiger Project. Each affected family will receive ₹15 lakh and one acre of land. The cabinet also authorized a one-year extension of service for assistant police personnel in the state, maintaining their existing terms. Furthermore, ₹97 crore 65 lakh 82 thousand 500 was allocated for the construction of the Government Polytechnic College building in Ranchi.
