The Jharkhand government is facing severe allegations from BJP leader Babulal Marandi, who claims the administration is actively creating new criminal incidents to divert attention from the real issues. Marandi asserts that this is a deliberate strategy by the government and its associated systems. Recent ED raids targeting the powerful coal mafia in Dhanbad have brought to light significant evidence of corruption and illicit activities. The most alarming aspect, according to Marandi, is the alleged directive from senior police officials, who are purportedly profiting from the coal trade, to ‘permanently eliminate’ key associates of the mafia. This targeted action is believed to be a desperate attempt to prevent witnesses from cooperating with the ED investigation. Reports indicate that individuals being interrogated by the ED are now facing threats of assassination, designed to suppress crucial information. This practice of ‘encounter justice,’ where criminals are allegedly killed to prevent them from testifying, has been seen before in Jharkhand. The state has previously dealt with a DGP infamous for alleged contract killings and record-breaking corruption, accusations even voiced by members of the ruling party. Marandi advised the ED to be exceptionally careful, warning that in Jharkhand, it is the perpetrators of cover-ups, not the truth-tellers, who wield influence. When political power and criminal enterprises merge, the manipulation of justice becomes a foregone conclusion.
