
The Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, has reiterated the government’s dedication to managing sickle cell disease, focusing on improved treatment and a better quality of life for those affected. Recognizing the disease’s impact on the entire family, the government is adopting a comprehensive strategy. Speaking at a UNICEF event on Sickle Cell Awareness Day, he highlighted the importance of public awareness. He believes that through concerted efforts, the disease can be effectively managed.
Soren stressed the need to increase screening for early detection and treatment. He pointed out that many people are unaware they are carriers, potentially passing the condition on. He proposed more extensive screening programs, along with counseling and support, including medication and other facilities. Newborn screening at birth was also suggested to enable early intervention and care. The government is working with organizations like UNICEF, and health initiatives are underway to improve the healthcare system. The aim is to prepare health profiles for effective disease management.
The Chief Minister instructed the health department to ensure that sickle cell patients have access to essential services, including testing, treatment, blood transfusions, and medications. He emphasized the key role of health counselors in the screening and counseling process. He also interacted with several patients, learning about their struggles and providing reassurance. He affirmed that the government is taking steps to help them.
