The SNMMCH government hospital in Dhanbad experienced a security lapse on the night of November 19th when a jackal entered the surgical ward, causing considerable distress to patients and staff. The animal’s presence was noted near the barricading, and it fled after patients switched on lights to get a better look. While the jackal did not attack anyone, the incident has ignited debate about the adequacy of security at the public healthcare facility.
Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari responded to the concerns by stating that the hospital or doctors should not be held accountable for wildlife entering urban areas. He used rhetorical questions to illustrate his point: “If a tiger enters the hospital, is it my responsibility? If a tiger enters the city, is it the government’s fault?” He also mentioned that encountering snakes in village hospitals is common and typically outside the control of medical personnel.
Looking ahead, the minister announced plans for a new, cutting-edge medical college and super-specialty hospital for Dhanbad, with the project already in its initial stages. This development is anticipated to provide superior healthcare and enhanced safety for the community. Hospital management has been tasked with reinforcing security protocols and maintaining stringent cleanliness standards to avert future disturbances. The minister affirmed his commitment to elevating the standard of medical care across the state through proactive measures and continuous oversight.
