Jharkhand is in mourning following the death of Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister and a key figure in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Soren passed away on Monday, August 4th, at the age of 81, after battling illness for several weeks at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. His son, Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister, announced the news.
Soren’s body was flown from Delhi to Ranchi on a special flight. Hemant Soren and his wife, Kalpana Soren, were on the flight. A large crowd of supporters and admirers, known as ‘Dishom Guru,’ gathered at Birsa Munda Airport and along the route to pay their respects.
JMM workers and leaders expressed their grief with slogans like ‘Dishom Guru Amar Rahen’. The mortal remains were then taken to Soren’s residence in Morhabadi. The final rites are planned for Tuesday at 12 noon in Nemra, Shibu Soren’s ancestral village in the Ramgarh district, with his youngest son Basant Soren performing the last rites.
Political leaders, including Congress figures Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, are expected to attend the funeral to honor the late leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu had previously paid their respects at the hospital in Delhi. The Jharkhand government has declared three days of state mourning in memory of Shibu Soren. He had been receiving treatment at the hospital for a month and a half and was on life support for a month.
