A pillar of compassion and affordable healthcare, Dr. Surendra Singh, has passed away. Celebrated for his remarkable commitment to the poor and his iconic ₹5 consultation fee, Dr. Singh was more than just a doctor; he was a symbol of hope and selfless service in Palamu. His unique approach to medicine prioritized patient welfare above all else.
Throughout his long career in Haidernagar, Ramna, and Nagar Untari, Dr. Singh became a trusted figure, offering medical assistance without the burden of exorbitant costs. He never engaged in unethical practices, such as unnecessary diagnostics or exploiting patients’ vulnerabilities. His availability was constant, with his clinic accessible day and night, free from any professional arrogance. This accessibility and genuine care endeared him to the community. Even after his health necessitated a move to Daltonganj, his dedication to patients remained. A local hospital sought his expertise, and despite his insistence on a ₹5 fee, he eventually practiced for ₹50 due to hospital operational realities.
Dr. Singh’s journey began in Murma village, where his upbringing in a modest family gave him firsthand insight into the struggles of the less fortunate. His educational path was fraught with challenges, underscoring his perseverance. He deeply cherished relationships and never sought financial gain from those he served. His life was marked by simplicity and a lack of pretense, embodying the noble ideals often associated with physicians. Dr. Surendra Singh’s dedication to serving humanity sets a benchmark for compassionate medical practice.
