Giridih experienced a vibrant atmosphere of celebration on Friday after the Jharkhand government officially approved the PESA (Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas) rules in a cabinet meeting held on December 23rd. In response, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) organized an impressive ‘Gratitude March’ to convey their heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his government for this significant policy shift. The festivities commenced at the JMM district office with the joyous distribution of sweets, followed by a dynamic procession featuring traditional drums and banners, moving towards Tower Chowk. District President Sanjay Singh articulated that this approval marks the fulfillment of a long-standing tribal aspiration for self-governance in scheduled areas, a vision finally realized after 25 years of the state’s existence. He further explained that the PESA law will empower Gram Sabhas, making them central to decision-making processes for development projects. District Secretary Mahalal Soren emphasized the strengthened protection of rights related to water, forests, and land. The collective sentiment, echoed by leaders like Nunuram Kisku alias Tiger and District Spokesperson Krishna Murari Sharma, was that this is a historic stride towards fortifying villages and the entire state. A large contingent of party supporters and villagers joined the celebrations.
