A disturbing cybercrime ring has been dismantled by Jagannathpur police in West Singhbhum, leading to the arrest of a man who allegedly blackmailed a woman after a fake marriage proposal. The victim came forward with a complaint against Md. Shamsher Ali alias Md. Shamsher Alam (39), residing in Aurangabad, Bihar, who allegedly courted her with promises of marriage before attempting to extort money using private images. Investigations revealed that the accused initiated contact online during the pandemic, building a relationship based on a false marriage promise. In 2023, he allegedly used dowry as a pretext to break off the engagement, with his brother Nisar Ali reportedly arranging his marriage to someone else. The cybercriminal continued to pressure the victim, creating compromising material and threatening to publish it across various online platforms. He demanded a substantial sum of ₹5 lakh from the victim and her family to keep the images private, causing her significant mental trauma. The Jagannathpur police filed a case against both Md. Shamsher Ali and Nisar Ali under relevant sections of the penal code and IT laws. A swift operation, guided by technical intelligence, led to the suspect’s arrest in Aurangabad on December 8, 2025. A smartphone containing the victim’s sensitive photos was recovered and seized as crucial digital evidence.
