Hemant Soren, born on August 10, 1975, in Nemra village, Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, is a prominent figure in Jharkhand’s political scene, having served as the state’s Chief Minister four times. His journey from a student to a leading politician reflects his dedication to public service and a resilient approach to challenges.
As Hemant Soren celebrated his 50th birthday on August 10, 2025, the occasion was marked with greetings from various leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key figures. These well wishes extended to the Chief Ministers of other states, along with leaders from Jharkhand’s political parties, all acknowledging his achievements and wishing him success in the future.
Tragedy struck Hemant Soren’s life when his father, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren, passed away on August 4, 2025, just days before his birthday. Following the death, Hemant not only performed the final rites but also observed traditional customs in his ancestral village in Ramgarh district, honoring his father’s memory.
Initially, Hemant aspired to become an engineer, and after completing his intermediate education, he was admitted to Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (BIT Mesra), Ranchi. However, he chose to pursue politics before finishing his engineering studies.
Hemant’s path to politics was influenced by his father’s and mother’s election losses in 1998 and 1999, which weakened the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Consequently, Hemant actively took part in party-building, especially in the Santhal Pargana region, to strengthen the party’s position. His dedication led to his father, Shibu Soren, winning the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 2002, 2004, and 2009.
Hemant’s debut in politics began in 2005 when he contested the Dumka Assembly seat but lost to Stephen Marandi. He continued to work on the ground, and he later achieved success in 2009 when he was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP.
In the 2009 Assembly elections, he contested from the Dumka seat once more, winning and then resigning from the Rajya Sabha.
In 2010, Hemant Soren became the Deputy Chief Minister under Arjun Munda. In 2013, he took the oath as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister for the first time. Later, he took oath on December 29, 2019, for the second time. However, he faced legal issues on December 31, 2023, when he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a land scam case. After his release from jail, he was sworn in for the third time as Chief Minister on July 4, 2024.
In the November 2024 Assembly elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, under Hemant’s leadership, won 34 seats. With his leadership, the coalition secured 56 seats, leading to a majority. On November 28, 2024, he took oath for the fourth time.
During the 13th Central General Convention of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha on April 15, 2025, Hemant Soren was elected the party’s central president. He now shoulders the responsibility of continuing his father’s legacy and fulfilling the aspirations of Jharkhand’s people.
