An urgent call has been made for the immediate implementation of the PESA law in Jharkhand, with a tribal rights group warning of an impending ‘existence crisis’ if delays persist. The group’s vice-president articulated that PESA is not merely about development but is intrinsically linked to the survival of the Jharkhandi society. Without PESA, the community anticipates increased land alienation, the outward flow of natural resources, and further marginalization. The current government’s slow pace is seen as an attempt to obstruct the devolution of power to village assemblies rather than empower them. The government is urged to provide a clear timeline for PESA’s enactment, ideally before or shortly after November 28, 2025, marking a significant point in the current government’s term. If the government remains unresponsive, tribal organizations are prepared to launch a statewide public campaign, signaling that the community’s patience has worn thin.
