The Ghaziabad Traffic Police will restrict the Delhi-Meerut Expressway’s Meerut-to-Delhi lane for Kanwariyas beginning at 10 PM on Saturday. This lane will be exclusively for those returning from Uttarakhand for the Kanwar Yatra. Concurrently, a ban on heavy vehicles has been imposed. Light vehicles, like cars and two-wheelers, will still be able to travel from Delhi to Meerut. The restrictions are expected to last until the Kanwar Yatra ends, potentially on July 23rd or 24th. This decision is in anticipation of a large number of postal Kanwariyas in Ghaziabad. Vehicles coming from Meerut will be diverted to National Highway-9 (NH-9). The existing restrictions on heavy vehicles on the three main Kanwar routes from July 11 will remain in effect. The Kanwar Yatra route in Ghaziabad covers 25 km from Muradnagar to Tila Mor, and 42.5 km from the Kadarabad border to the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. An alternative route of approximately 53 km on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and National Highway-9 is also included. Heavy vehicles can access NH-9 only from UP Gate and must use the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to reach their destinations. Existing traffic restrictions on the Delhi-Meerut Road will continue. The Meerut-to-Ghaziabad route will be solely for Kanwariyas, while the opposite direction will remain open for general traffic. The traffic police have identified 12 areas where traffic congestion is anticipated. Traffic will be temporarily halted at these locations to facilitate the safe passage of Kanwariyas, with normal traffic resuming after they pass.
