A high-level investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been ordered by the Supreme Court into the fatal Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives. The apex court has also instituted a three-judge committee to ensure the integrity of the investigation. This committee, chaired by Justice Ajay Rastogi with two IPS officers from Tamil Nadu’s cadre (but not native to the state), will oversee the CBI’s work. The move comes after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) approached the Supreme Court, seeking a robust, court-monitored inquiry. The Supreme Court emphasized the gravity of the situation, linking it to citizens’ fundamental rights. The CBI is mandated to submit monthly reports to the committee, and the committee will operate with the freedom to devise its own procedures. The court also pointed out perceived discrepancies in earlier High Court proceedings.
