New revelations about Manojit Mishra, the prime accused in the Kolkata law college student rape case, paint a picture of a repeat offender. Many reports indicate that Mishra, nicknamed ‘Mango,’ displayed a disturbing pattern of behavior towards women, and also that he had connections to the ruling party. BJP leader Amit Malviya has raised concerns about Mishra’s relationship with the Trinamool Congress.
Mishra allegedly used the phrase, “Tui amay biye korbi?” – “Will you marry me?” to initiate contact with women. He was expelled from the college’s Trinamool unit in 2021 for using this line to approach several women on campus. A third-year student stated that Mishra and his associates created a climate of fear for female students, and that authorities did not intervene despite the student’s complaints.
Mishra’s political affiliations include his former position as President of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at South Calcutta Law College. He currently serves as the General Secretary of TMCP in the South Kolkata district. Despite some attempts to distance themselves, Mishra has been seen with prominent TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee. His social media profiles also show him at many events with other TMC leaders.
Amit Malviya has criticized the TMC’s association with Mishra, calling their response ‘criminal’. Malviya stated that Mishra had been accused of attempted murder and faced several complaints of molestation. According to Malviya, despite these accusations, no action was taken. He also highlighted that Mishra was known for his pattern of harassment and making unwanted marriage proposals. Malviya also raised concerns about why Mishra was given a role in a government college in 2023. Malviya revealed that Mishra filmed and shared private moments of girls.
The gang-rape took place at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata on June 25th. The police have arrested four individuals, including the main accused, and a special team has been formed to investigate the incident. Mishra along with Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukerjee have been charged with rape. The incident follows the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case, which has increased political tensions in West Bengal.
