The distressing alleged suicide of a woman doctor in Maharashtra has prompted a strong response from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who has labeled the incident ‘institutional murder’ and is demanding justice for the victim. The doctor was discovered hanging in a hotel room under circumstances that have raised serious questions. Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane, a key figure in the case, has surrendered and been arrested by the Phaltan Police. Badane was reportedly suspended and had been on the run, facing accusations of repeatedly raping the doctor and pushing her to take her own life.
In a parallel development, police have also arrested Prashant Bankar, the son of the deceased doctor’s landlord. Bankar is accused of inflicting severe mental harassment on the doctor. Her poignant suicide note and a message written on her palm before her death directly implicated both Badane and Bankar in her suffering.
Rahul Gandhi articulated his outrage through a social media post, describing the doctor’s descent into despair due to ‘rape and harassment’ as a deeply disturbing tragedy. He asserted that a promising medical professional, dedicated to helping others, was victimized by a corrupt system and powerful individuals. Gandhi highlighted alleged attempts by influential figures, reportedly linked to the BJP, to coerce her into corrupt practices. He vehemently declared the event not a suicide but an ‘institutional murder,’ driven by a ‘criminally protected ideology.’ Gandhi affirmed his commitment and that of his party to stand with the victim’s family in their pursuit of justice, vowing to ensure that ‘no more fear’ grips Indian daughters.
The victim, a government medical officer at Phaltan sub-district hospital, was originally from Beed. Her detailed suicide note described enduring five months of brutal physical and mental torture. She specifically named Sub-Inspector Badane for repeated rape and Bankar for constant psychological torment. Furthermore, she alleged that a Member of Parliament (MP) and his associates had attempted to force her to falsify medical reports for accused individuals. Her note also indicated that despite submitting 21 complaints, no effective action was taken. She recounted a specific incident where an MP allegedly threatened her over the phone for refusing to provide a false medical certificate.
Authorities have booked both accused individuals under relevant sections of the law. The Satara Superintendent of Police has assured a thorough investigation into all allegations, including the sexual assault claims, harassment, and the alleged involvement of political figures. The police are committed to a comprehensive inquiry to bring all responsible parties to account.
