
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Maldives was marked by significant announcements and agreements designed to strengthen the bilateral relationship. The visit coincided with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ Independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Key outcomes included the extension of a Line of Credit, a reduction in debt repayment obligations, and the commencement of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement. Furthermore, both nations agreed on the joint issuance of a commemorative stamp and the handover of social housing units. Infrastructure projects in Addu city were inaugurated, and essential vehicles and equipment were provided to the Maldivian government. This series of initiatives reflects India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision. PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in times of need. The Maldivian President echoed the importance of the Free Trade Agreement. The leaders also participated in a tree planting initiative, symbolizing the close ties and shared values between the two nations.
