Preparations are underway for a possible visit by Prime Minister Modi to Manipur on September 13th, with the government tightening security measures. This visit would be the first since the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. As part of the security plan, a ban on air guns has been imposed in Churachandpur district. The government has not officially confirmed the Prime Minister’s visit at this time. Dharun Kumar, the District Magistrate of Churachandpur, issued an order that prohibits the use, possession, and display of air guns within the district, in consideration of the Prime Minister’s security. Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating this order. The government’s order stated that the PM’s planned visit to Churachandpur requires comprehensive security arrangements to facilitate a safe and orderly event. The presence of air guns is considered a potential cause for alarm and security concerns; therefore, their use and possession are strictly forbidden. Legal action will be taken against anyone who disregards this order. The Superintendent of Police of Churachandpur will be responsible for ensuring the order’s enforcement. Although the visit is anticipated, no official announcements have been made from either New Delhi or Imphal regarding the visit. Numerous meetings have been held in the state to prepare for the Prime Minister’s arrival. Churachandpur is a significant area for the Kuki community. The ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023 led to the resignation of the Chief Minister and the imposition of President’s rule. The violence resulted in over 250 fatalities and caused the displacement of numerous individuals. If the visit occurs, it will mark Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Manipur since the events.
