In the context of the US imposing a 50% tariff on Indian products, Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, shared a significant observation. He conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that, despite potential dissatisfaction from some quarters, Modi’s strong leadership allows him to manage challenging circumstances. This statement was made after Rabuka delivered a lecture at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) on the theme of ‘Ocean of Peace’ in Sapru House, where he discussed his interaction with PM Modi.
PM Rabuka’s visit to Delhi, lasting three days, was focused on strengthening Fiji’s ties with India in areas such as maritime security, trade, health, digital technology, and capacity building. India and Fiji finalized a plan of action to reinforce defense relations, and they agreed to work together towards a peaceful and inclusive Indo-Pacific. PM Modi and Rabuka held discussions to extend comprehensive bilateral cooperation.
At the ICWA lecture, Rabuka, when asked about his discussions with world leaders concerning the ‘Ocean of Peace’, mentioned that he did not have any direct conversation with the U.S. President. He mentioned that he requested a bilateral meeting with the Russian President and had a bilateral meeting with the British Prime Minister. He noted that PM Modi shared their sentiments. Rabuka said, without expanding, that the ongoing developments, especially the recent tariff announcements, were affecting relations with the US, and that while some people might be unhappy, PM Modi’s personality enables him to withstand these difficult situations.
