A new dynamic has emerged in Bihar’s political arena as Tejashwi Yadav, a prominent RJD leader, has branded Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as a ‘putla’ (puppet) and a ‘mukhota’ (mask), predicting his eventual sidelining by the BJP. Nitish Kumar, in turn, has strongly refuted these claims, labeling the opposition’s manifesto as a ‘bundle of lies’ and highlighting his government’s achievements.
The Mahagathbandhan’s manifesto, launched by Tejashwi Yadav, presents a comprehensive set of promises aimed at voters. Key among these are the guarantee of government jobs for at least one member per family in Bihar and the establishment of a system for quick job appointments. The manifesto also commits to offering permanent government jobs and a higher salary to ‘Jeevika Didis,’ converting contractual staff to permanent roles, and reverting to the Old Pension Scheme. Additionally, it includes financial assistance for women, free electricity, and enhanced reservation quotas.
The manifesto launch served to solidify Tejashwi Yadav’s position as the de facto leader of the Mahagathbandhan. Despite framing the election as a direct contest with Nitish Kumar, Yadav’s ‘puppet’ narrative was swiftly countered by Kumar’s public response. This exchange challenges Yadav’s portrayal of Kumar as being influenced by external forces. While Yadav has spoken of Kumar’s declining health, the Chief Minister appears active in campaigning, holding multiple rallies daily. The impact of Tejashwi Yadav’s rhetoric on the common voter remains to be seen.
