Indian Railways is set to revamp its non-AC train infrastructure following a tragic event involving overcrowded Mumbai local trains, which resulted in the loss of four lives. The primary focus of the redesign is to enhance safety and passenger comfort. The upgraded trains will be equipped with automatic closing doors and enhanced ventilation to address concerns related to overcrowding and passenger safety. To combat potential issues such as suffocation that could arise due to the installation of auto-closing doors, the new trains will be designed with louvres and roof-mounted ventilation units to ensure an ample supply of fresh air. The Railway Board has confirmed that these redesigned trains are slated for deployment by January 2026, following completion of the project in November 2025, after all the necessary tests and certifications. The initiative also includes vestibules in the coaches to permit the natural redistribution of crowds.
