The Congress party, spearheaded by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has strongly criticized the Indian government’s approach to the Palestinian issue. The criticism followed the decision by Australia, Canada, and the UK to recognize Palestine as a state. Vadra labeled the Indian government’s policy as shameful and morally cowardly, particularly over the last two years. She reminded that India was among the first nations to recognize Palestine as a state in 1988. According to her, India had previously demonstrated leadership by supporting the Palestinian cause. She highlighted how India had championed the values of humanity and justice on the international stage.
Jairam Ramesh, also from Congress, highlighted the recent recognitions from Australia, Canada, and the UK. He stated that India had officially recognized Palestine in November 1988. Ramesh criticized the current Indian policy on Palestine. The comments were made after the UK confirmed it would recognize Palestine, facing opposition from the US and Israel. The Congress has been critical of the Modi government’s silence on Israel’s actions. In August, Priyanka Gandhi condemned Israel’s actions, accusing the Indian government of remaining silent while the Palestinians were suffering. India recently voted in favor of a UN resolution in support of a two-state solution for the Palestinian issue.
