After a devastating incident on the Mumbai railway, Indian Railways has committed to a significant redesign of its non-AC trains. The overhaul comes after four commuters died in an accident involving overcrowded trains. The new design will focus on passenger safety and improved comfort, featuring auto-closing doors and enhanced ventilation. To combat the issue of reduced airflow, the new trains will include louvres on the doors and roof-mounted ventilation units. These modifications are slated to be ready by November 2025, with the trains entering service by January 2026 following the completion of required testing and certifications. The Railway Board plans to add vestibules to allow passengers to distribute themselves more effectively throughout the coaches.
