Shibu Soren, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and a key figure in the fight for Jharkhand’s statehood, has died. Known as “Dishom Guru,” Soren championed the cause of Adivasi communities. His career was dedicated to advocating for their rights. He established the Santhal Sudhar Samaj and an ashram in Tundi, Dhanbad, organizing tribals against exploitation by moneylenders and landlords. Soren’s birth on January 11, 1944, in Nemhra village, marked the beginning of a life devoted to activism. His father’s death in the 1960s propelled him to fight for justice. In 1972, he co-founded the JMM, which ultimately led to the creation of a separate state. He served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times and held important positions, but his career was also complicated by allegations and legal battles. These events, including accusations of inciting violence and his involvement in a murder case, impacted his political journey, creating both peaks and valleys in his influence.
