Prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) and transferred to Jodhpur Central Jail, where he is under constant surveillance. This move follows violent demonstrations in Ladakh, where protestors demanded statehood and constitutional protections, leading to casualties. The jail also houses Asaram Bapu, although Wangchuk is held in a different area.
The Ladakh administration has responded by cutting off mobile internet services in the Leh district. Wangchuk’s arrest was unexpected; he was scheduled to speak at a press conference, but when he did not arrive, organizers grew concerned. Police officials later confirmed his arrest from his village.
Despite the unexpected arrest, organizers proceeded with the press conference, conceding that the recent violence was caused by unrestrained youth while denying any foreign involvement. The co-chair of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), Chering Dorje, called for a judicial inquiry into the deaths that occurred during the protests, refuting any external influence.
Dorje criticized the police and CRPF for opening fire on protestors without employing alternative methods like water cannons or warnings. He also expressed the intent to escalate the movement if the government fails to engage in timely dialogue, emphasizing the peaceful and non-violent nature of their demonstrations.
Wangchuk initiated a hunger strike, which led to an invitation for talks with the Centre. However, an uneasy peace has fallen over the region. Curfew continues, with no further incidents reported.
The curfew was imposed after clashes on Wednesday that resulted in casualties. The protests were focused on demands for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule. Officials have indicated that security is being maintained and that restrictions may ease to allow access to necessary supplies.
Over 50 people were arrested, and gatherings were restricted in Kargil and other areas. The Ministry of Home Affairs has dispatched a team to assess the situation in Leh.
Wangchuk’s arrest came after his organization, SECMOL, had its FCRA license revoked, citing financial irregularities. Opposition parties have criticized the government’s handling of the situation following the arrest. Wangchuk’s wife has accused the government of spreading false claims against him and mistreating him.
She further criticized the BJP and the party’s ideals, while opposition parties have accused the government of using its power to suppress dissent.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the arrest unfortunate and accused the central government of breaking its promises. Jairam Ramesh condemned the arrest on social media.
