The Supreme Court’s recent decision concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar has ignited a fresh political debate, particularly focusing on the role of Aadhaar. BJP MP Sambit Patra wasted no time in criticizing the Congress and other opposition parties, accusing them of displaying “double standards” regarding Aadhaar.
Patra highlighted the contradiction between the opposition’s previous stance against linking Aadhaar with voter ID cards and their current demand for its inclusion in electoral reforms. He cited the Prime Minister’s remarks in Parliament supporting Aadhaar, which were opposed by the Congress. He further pointed out that the Congress had challenged the linking of Aadhaar and voter cards in the Supreme Court in 2022.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of misleading the public regarding the court’s decision, while AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi welcomed the court’s decision, criticizing ECI sources for misrepresenting the order. The Supreme Court allowed the Election Commission to continue the SIR process, also allowing the use of Aadhaar, ration cards, and voter ID cards as valid documents for voter identification.
