Residents of Tamil Nadu should prepare for continued widespread rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy downpours to persist until October 19. The meteorological center has identified a low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal and strong easterly winds as the cause for this wet spell. A significant number of districts, totaling 16, are on high alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday. These include prominent areas like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, and Tenkasi, alongside others such as Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Madurai, and Tiruvannamalai. The alert also extends to Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai for isolated heavy showers. Coastal districts and the higher elevations of Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari are specifically mentioned for potential heavy rains around October 15-16. Chennai is likely to experience moderate rain with thunderstorms, and authorities are warning of potential water accumulation in low-lying zones. Previous intense rainfall has already led to flash floods and damaged infrastructure in western parts of the state, while reservoir levels have risen, prompting controlled water releases. The administration in the Nilgiris district has implemented safety measures, including temporary road closures, following reports of landslides. Citizens in vulnerable areas are urged to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel. The state government is coordinating efforts and has disaster management teams ready.
