The Indian government has voiced its support for the upcoming meeting in Alaska between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is set to take place on August 15th. The primary focus of this meeting is to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as stated by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The Ministry’s statement expressed India’s welcome of the discussions between the United States and Russia. The statement also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier remarks, emphasizing that the current era is not defined by war. This gathering marks Putin’s first visit to the United States since 2015. President Trump made the announcement of the meeting on Truth Social. Meanwhile, the Kremlin indicated that the discussions between the two leaders would center on finding long-term peaceful solutions to the Ukrainian crisis, acknowledging the complexity of the situation and assuring active Russian involvement. During the signing of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement at the White House, Trump mentioned the possibility of land exchange within any future agreement. In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to retaining its territory. Furthermore, a meeting took place between Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Putin in Moscow, which the US described as highly productive. India has also faced repercussions, as Trump implemented a 25 percent tariff on Russian oil imports.
