A significant blow has been dealt to the drug trade in the Northeast with the Assam Rifles, in a coordinated operation with Mizoram Police, seizing methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 45 crore. The operation, which took place in the Saitual district, also led to the arrest of two individuals involved in the illicit trade.
Based on credible intelligence concerning drug trafficking along the Ngopa-Saitual road, a joint team was swiftly deployed. The Assam Rifles established a strategic vehicle checkpoint and managed to intercept a vehicle suspected of carrying contraband. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 15 kilograms of banned methamphetamine tablets, a highly addictive substance, with an estimated market value of Rs 45 crore.
The arrested persons, identified as Rabizul Haq and Naasiruddin, are reportedly residents of Barpeta in western Assam. The recovered methamphetamine, believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar, along with the arrested individuals and their vehicle, have been handed over to the Saitual district Police. Authorities will now conduct a detailed investigation into the network involved.
This successful operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb the drug menace in Mizoram and the wider northeastern region. The porous border with Myanmar is a major concern, facilitating the transit of drugs like heroin and methamphetamine into India. Recent seizures of similar drugs in Assam further underscore the persistent challenge faced by security forces.
