The United States and India are set to re-engage in trade discussions in New Delhi. The talks come after the US levied punitive tariffs on India due to its purchasing of Russian oil. A high-ranking US trade delegation, spearheaded by Brendan Lynch, the Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, will be meeting with Indian authorities. This meeting is anticipated to be a key step in determining the direction of future trade negotiations. The US trade team had planned to be in India from August 25-29 for the sixth round of bilateral trade agreement talks, but those plans were put on hold due to Washington’s tariffs. These included a 25% tariff linked to India’s Russian oil imports. Even with the strained situation, both parties have engaged in weekly virtual meetings. Rajesh Agrawal, a Special Secretary within India’s Commerce Ministry, will be among the Indian representatives, joined by other key officials. Representatives from India’s finance and corporate affairs ministries are also scheduled to attend.
